Mumbai Railway Clears 5,200 Square Metres of Encroachments for Bandra Terminus Expansion Amid High Security Operation
Western Railway cleared 400–500 illegal structures across 5,200 square metres in Bandra East for Bandra Terminus expansion between May 19–23. The ₹600 crore land recovery faced protests on May 20, leading to stone pelting, injuries, and detentions, while rehabilitation for 100 families has been planned under a 2021 survey.
The drive, conducted under Western Railway’s expansion and modernization plan, involved systematic demolition of encroachments spread across the designated railway land. Officials stated that the objective of the operation is to strengthen passenger handling capacity and streamline rail movement in one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban and long-distance rail hubs.
On May 20, tensions escalated during the clearance process when protests erupted following the demolition of a prayer structure in the affected area. The situation turned volatile after incidents of stone pelting, which resulted in injuries to railway protection personnel and police officers deployed at the site. In response, law enforcement authorities carried out a baton charge to disperse the crowd and brought the situation under control. Between 10 and 16 individuals were detained in connection with the unrest.
Despite the disturbances, the clearance operation continued under heightened security arrangements. Officials confirmed that around 100 eligible families, identified through a 2021 survey, will be provided rehabilitation support as part of the resettlement process linked to the encroachment removal initiative.
As the operation nears completion, authorities maintain strict security in the area, while public response remains divided between support for infrastructure development and concern over displacement and demolition actions. The project is expected to significantly enhance rail capacity and improve commuter efficiency once fully implemented, marking a major step in the transformation of Bandra Terminus into a more modern transport hub.
